Answer
I think he had a crush on her and thought of it as love but never opened himself up enough to really know what love is until after he told Voldemort the prophecy and got her killed. Then the guilt ate at him, he went to the good side, and learned to open up his heart a little more Dumbledore can have that affect on just about everyone.
